Most foods are safe while breastfeeding, but some may change a baby’s comfort. Limit caffeine to about one or two cups of coffee or tea per day to avoid infant irritability. Alcohol is best avoided while actively breastfeeding; if used, time feeds and discuss safe limits with a clinician. Strongly spicy or gassy foods—like heavy fried dishes—don’t need total avoidance unless your baby shows symptoms such as a pattern of fussiness or colic after feeds.
