Strip thermometers are the inexpensive color-changing stickers or strips that stick to the forehead and change color at different temperature bands. Their appeal is clear: cheap, portable, and non-invasive. However, testing and expert reviewers agree these strips can be inconsistent and often under- or overestimate core temperature. Because they measure skin surface temperature, environmental conditions, and sweat can easily distort the reading. Prices are usually under five dollars, and many are disposable, which can be handy for travel kits. The upside is ready availability and zero contact concerns; the downside is that they should not be used for medical decisions or to determine whether a child needs a doctor. In a household where quick, informal checks are the goal, a strip might do, but if fever detection affects treatment or isolation choices, use a probe-based or reliable infrared model. If you keep strips for travel, treat them as a first look only and confirm with a more accurate device at home when practical.
